Get Smart And Read Through These Tips On Personal Finance

Many people feel overwhelmed when they think about improving their finances. However, personal finances don't have to be complicated or painful. If you take the time to learn where your money is going and figure out where you want it to go instead, you should be able to improve your finances fairly quickly.

A tremendously useful tip for anyone looking to get a better handle on their own personal financial situation is to take the time to document every single expenditure made in a given period of time. Whether you use a day, a week or a month as your yardstick, actually writing down where your money goes can help you decide where cuts can be made, and dollars can be saved.

Never share your personal information with anyone, as this can make it much easier for someone to hack your accounts or to commit identity fraud. Even if you trust someone, they may not be very careful in recording your login information and make it easier for a criminal to hack into your account.

Take a look in your bathroom at some of the toiletries that you consistently purchase, and see if there are any items that you can get at a fraction of the cost. Try different types of products to see if there are any that give you the same results at a lower price.

Always look for ways to do things that you normally do, but at a lower cost. For example, you can brew coffee at home, instead of going to a coffee shop each and every morning. If you purchase two cups of coffee a day at $3 each, you would save a couple of thousand dollars a year.

The best way to manage your finances each month is to set a budget. Figure out how much you make each month. Then, add up your rent, automobile expenses, and any other bills you have. Determine how much these bills add up to and subtract that amount from your income. The result is how much money you have leftover each month.

Negotiate your salary with your employer. If you feel like you deserve a raise, ask for one. Find out how much your colleagues are paid and make sure you get the salary you deserve. Start looking for a better job if you feel like you could be earning more money.

Find different ways to invest your money. Look for stable investments and get advice from a professional if you need to. Build your portfolio slowly by starting with small investments and place more money in the kind of investments that have worked well before. Explore different options, such as, real estate, and stocks and bonds.

When going food shopping, be sure to check for items that are on sale in the store. Obviously, you won't gain anything from buying things that you wouldn't normally buy, but it can be useful if your regular items are on sale. This can save you a lot of money on your food budget.

As you can see, finances don't have to be boring or frustrating. You can enjoy dealing with finances now that you know what you are doing. Choose your favorite tips from the ones you just read, so that you can begin improving your finances. Don't forget to get excited about what you're saving!

AG emails: get to the bottom of Fast and Furious

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Emails by Attorney General Eric Holder from early 2011 express the need to get to the bottom of allegations that a risky law enforcement tactic had been used in Operation Fast and Furious.

In the early days of the controversy, two of Holder's e-mails and one by Deputy Attorney General James Cole expressed growing concern that something might have gone wrong in the flawed federal gun-smuggling probe.

In one e-mail, Holder tells aides, quote: "We need answers on this."

The full contents of the e-mails were described to The Associated Press by two people who have seen them.

Pre-summit document presses EU banking union

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European leaders will discuss specific steps towards a cross-border banking union, closer fiscal integration and the possibility of a debt redemption fund at a summit on June 28-29, according to a document prepared for the meeting.

Two officials familiar with the 10-15 page document, drawn up over the past month and which is still being revised ahead of the summit, said it sets out in detail the four "pillars" required for a strong economic and monetary union which leaders believe is necessary to secure the currency project's future.

As well as progress towards a banking union, the paper discusses the need for a more integrated budget policy, steps required for deeper economic integration, and how to retain "democratic legitimacy" if countries give up some sovereignty.

The document has been drafted by European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi, and Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the Eurogroup countries using the euro.

European leaders have already said the first area they need to work on is a banking integration as they try to break the link between bad banks and indebted governments, with the worsening situation in Spain an immediate concern.

EU officials believe that could be achieved in a year, although Berlin wants to see much more progress towards fiscal integration first, something that would require much longer due to the need to change the European Union treaty to achieve it.

The document goes into most detail on the banking proposals, setting out the need for a single European banking supervisor, a common EU deposit-guarantee scheme and a single bank-resolution fund to wind down the region's bad banks, the officials said.

The paper sets out options under each heading, saying that when it comes to a single banking supervisor it could either be charged with overseeing all EU banks, or else look after the major systemic banks with cross-border operations, while another body looks after broader, day-to-day oversight.

The expectation is the ECB will eventually be given sole responsibility for overseeing Europe's biggest banks, while the European Banking Authority watchdog retains a broader oversight role along with coordinating the work of national regulators.

On a common deposit insurance mechanism, the paper suggests that there needs to be a strengthening of and closer integration among national guarantee schemes to provide a more reassuring backstop across the whole European Union.

On a resolution fund to deal with failing banks, it calls for a single mechanism "with a large envelope" that would be financed via levies on the banking sector, such as a financial transaction tax, and would offer "an integrated EU solution for resolution".

The document, which draws heavily on proposals made by the European Commission on June 6, says an "immediate and permanent mutualisation" of risk may be required to backstop the banking sector. It suggests the euro zone's permanent ESM bailout fund could be used to recapitalize banks directly, rather than having to lend to governments for on-lending to banks.

All of those proposals would be possible under existing EU treaties and could be implemented relatively rapidly, the document indicates.

Even if it took only a year, this will probably not come quick enough to ease market pressure on Spain and Italy that is now reaching danger levels, although some analysts believe a strong signal of intent could help. That could also persuade the ECB to step in.

"Short term, there is clearly a risk that the summit will disappoint markets yet again. If that were to be the case, I have no doubt that the ECB will step in," said Erik Neilsen, global chief economist at Unicredit.

That could take the form of an interest rate cut, further easing of collateral rules for Spanish banks so they can continue to access ECB funds or even a resumption of the bank's bond-buying program, which several of its policymakers oppose, he said.

BUDGET INTEGRATION

In a second section examining the steps required for closer fiscal coordination, the document says there is a need to go beyond existing legislative proposals such as the fiscal treaty, which 25 of the EU's 27 countries have signed up to and which commits them to a balanced budget.

The paper says that as closer banking and fiscal integration is achieved, the issue of mutualisation of debt will become more immediate and it raises the option of a debt redemption fund along the lines of that proposed by Germany's "wise men".

That is an idea that France, Italy and others have pushed hard for but which German Chancellor Angela Merkel opposes.

Merkel has not ruled out a sharing of debt per se, but has said any discussion on it can only happen at the end of a long process of integration that is likely to take many years. In contrast, France will find it difficult to stomach the loss of sovereignty that fiscal union would demand.

"The political leaders are now trying to move to a degree of fiscal and political union within a very short period of time. In democracies, such changes usually take a few years, and whether enough can be achieved in time remains to be seen," Neilsen said.

"However, in my mind, this does not imply an imminent risk of a breakdown of the euro zone ... It's a political project, and political leaders are unlikely to throw in the towel because markets don't like the policies."

Other sections of the document discuss the broader aims of greater EU labor mobility, efforts to improve pan-EU competitiveness, and to examine common taxation such as a common corporate tax base and a financial transactions levy.

There is likely to be heated discussion on issues such as debt mutualisation and any pooling of liability under a banking union, with Germany adamant that it will not be put on the line to underwrite the liabilities of other euro zone countries.

No decisions are expected at the summit, but if leaders agree that there are grounds to push ahead, Barroso, Van Rompuy and the others will be given a further mandate to develop the ideas in greater detail, including more specific timelines.

Van Rompuy has said he hopes to have a more thorough set of plans drawn up by the next EU leaders' summit in October or possibly the one after in December.

University of Georgia ending 20-year pattern

Ole Miss // Auburn // 9

Mississippi St. // Auburn // 7

Note: Missouri and Texas A&M officially join the SEC next Sunday.

When former University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley was given the additional role of athletic director in 1979, one of his first objectives was to adjust his late-season schedule.

"The three biggest rivals we've had for a long time are Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech, and at one time we played them all in a row," Dooley said. "We wanted to split that up, and we were able to do it."

Now the big question concerning Georgia's football schedule is which team annually will provide the early-season challenge.

The Bulldogs have opened Southeastern Conference play the past 20 seasons against South Carolina, but that run is coming to an end. Georgia's SEC opener this year will be at Missouri on Sept. 8.

It's unknown whether the league's new Tigers will remain Georgia's first SEC foe in 2013 and beyond or if South Carolina moves back or even another East Division team takes the spot. League officials are hoping to release more specifics about future scheduling later this summer.

"I think what you will see is probably a great deal of movement in those games," Bulldogs athletic director Greg McGarity said. "I'm just guessing here, but once our TV partners weigh in, I think providing traditional games that from a television standpoint are attractive would be part of the mix there.

"I think what you may see there is a variation on when you may play certain teams, and that will obviously be determined at a later date once TV has a chance to weigh in and meet with the commissioner to find out what is best for all concerned. I don't think there is going to be anything definite as far as when you play most of your teams."

In the past half century, Georgia has been linked with three annual early-season rivalries: Alabama, Clemson and South Carolina.

Alabama was Georgia's opening opponent from 1959 to '65, shredding the Bulldogs 31-3 in the '64 matchup at Tuscaloosa to spoil Dooley's debut as a head coach. The Bulldogs rebounded the following year to stun the Crimson Tide 18-17 in Athens, but the series was discontinued after the Saturday Evening Post claimed the '62 game, which the Tide won 35-0 in Birmingham, had been fixed by Alabama coach Bear Bryant and Bulldogs athletic director Wally Butts.

Bryant and Butts sued the Post, which in 1967 had to pay $3.06 million in damages.

"Because of the Saturday Evening Post scandal, the powers that be in the remaking of the league schedule decided it wouldn't be good for us to have Alabama as a normal rival," Dooley said. "So what they ended up doing, which wasn't very good, is make Ole Miss a rival or a constant game that we played every year. Alabama and Georgia would have been a natural rivalry.

"Any time you play a team from an adjacent state, it's big."

Clemson is not only from an adjacent state to Georgia but is within 90 minutes of UGA's campus except for autumn Saturdays. The Bulldogs waxed the Atlantic Coast Conference's Tigers throughout the 1960s and early '70s, but the teams split the eight 1974-81 meetings.

Georgia won the '80 matchup and Clemson the '81 encounter, and the victor in each of those seasons went on to win the national championship.

"We played them every year for a long period of time," Dooley said, "and it was a dangerous challenge because Clemson's two biggest rivals were South Carolina and Georgia, and Clemson was not among Georgia's top three or four. We had Auburn, we had Florida and we had Georgia Tech, and we had other teams in the conference. Clemson really got up for us."

Georgia and Clemson played each other through 1987 but have met just six times since, with expansions in both conferences greatly factoring into the infrequency of that series.

The Georgia-South Carolina game has played second fiddle to Florida-Tennessee for most of the past two decades, but the Gamecocks and Bulldogs have combined to win the past two SEC East titles. This year's matchup will take place in Columbia, S.C., on Oct. 6, four weeks after the Bulldogs visit the league's new Columbia (Mo.).

"They had to make a quick decision, and this may have been the best quick decision they could have made," Dooley said. "We were supposed to go to Alabama this season, so it's better to go to Missouri, no doubt about that, but the minus side is that an early game like that on the road could be very tough."

Android this week: 4.1 for Nexus; Galaxy S III reviewed; Swype and SwiftKey improve

Google?s annual developer conference is next week, but some Android news is leaking out in advance. For a brief time period on Thursday, anyone purchasing a GSM Galaxy Nexus direct from Google got the tip: The Jelly Bean version of Android is definitely 4.1 and it will first appear soon on Google?s Nexus. Details of what Jelly Bean will contain are still a mystery but Galaxy Nexus owners will have the initial look at the software.

Similar to the Nexus is the Galaxy S III, although it shows many improvements both in the hardware and software. Both are made by Samsung, hence the similarities, but those looking for cutting-edge performance in a thin 4.8-inch high-resolution smartphone should certainly check out Samsung?s new phone. My own experiences show a device that many people will be happy to use for quite some time, even if they purchase on a 2-year contract. I don?t think Samsung?s competitors will catch up that quickly on the software front.

The trick is, however, finding a Galaxy S III. Even though the device is launching on five U.S. carriers, it?s already playing hard to get. This week both Sprint(s) and AT&T announced they were experiencing inventory shortages due to high demand.

Verizon never planned to deliver the phone until early July, possibly expecting or planning for such a situation. T-Mobile does have the Galaxy S III in limited markets, but is charging $80 more per handset; even after a $50 mail-in rebate. Still, I think the phone is worth the wait. And if it weren?t for fast Android updates direct from Google, I?d likely buy one myself.

One of the appealing features of Android as a whole has two updated options this week: Both Swype and SwiftKey improved their keyboard software for Android devices. Swype gained XT9 predictive text technologies to improve the keyboard?s ability to guess the word you?ve swiped. It does so through sentence context. Even better: The keyboard learns to better predict phrases by scanning your prior communications, helping to automatically insert the right text.

SwiftKey actually offered that same learning technology last year in a similar fashion, but now improves with a range of small, but useful features: smart spacing, two new themes ? including the Android 4.0 ?Holo? look ? larger spacebar, dedicated comma key, and faster access to common punctuation.

I?ll go back to try the new Swype, but I find SwiftKey to be a better option for my fingers. You can find?SwiftKey in the Google Play store for?$1.99 (half price this week) while registering for the Swype beta will get you a free direct download.

Fuel supply breather for Coal India

New Delhi, June 22: The Prime Minister?s Office today scaled down the minimum quantity that Coal India has to supply to power firms to 65 per cent of the amount committed in the fuel pacts.

Under the revised terms, the PMO asked the coal producer to supply at least 65 per cent of the contracted quantity within the first three years after signing the fuel supply agreements (FSA), coal secretary S.K. Srivastava said after a meeting with PMO officials.

CIL had sought a lower commitment on the assured fuel supply against 80 per cent directed by the PMO earlier.

The PMO, however, said the supply had to increase to 72 per cent in the fourth year followed by 80 per cent in the fifth year of the agreement, sources added.

Private power producers are disappointed with the revised supply terms. ?The plant load factor (PLF) will be only 50 per cent with 65 per cent coal supply and no plant can function at such low supplies. The power regulator will not allow the developer to recover even fixed charges with such low PLF,? said Ashok Khurana, director-general of the Association of Power Producers, which represents firms such as Anil Ambani?s Reliance Power and the Tatas.

The directions were given after a meeting of Pulok Chatterjee, principal secretary to the Prime Minister, with coal secretary S. K. Srivastava and CIL chairman and managing director S. Narsing Rao.

The coal PSU is set to ink agreements with 48 power companies to enable them to operate an estimated 18,522MW of capacity, implying that CIL will have to annually supply an additional 54 million tonnes over and above its current capacity.

Coal India had also suggested a 0.01 per cent penalty on not delivering the fuel on time, but the penalty would only be applicable after three years of signing the pact. This prompted power firms to seek the PMO?s intervention.

Sources said the PMO had also asked Coal India to increase the penalty to 10 per cent without any moratorium.

CIL, which accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic coal production, will consider the PMO?s directions at its board meeting, which is likely to be held next month.

?We will now be having a board meeting of Coal India. They may take a final view on all these issues (penalty, FSA, coal imports),? Srivastava said.

CIL, which missed the revised production target last fiscal and produced 435 million tonnes of coal, has set a target of 464 million tonnes for 2012-13.

He remained steadfast that he never even met the woman, and she eventually dropped her claim.</P><P>But, as it turns out &#8212; according to Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun &#8212; when Bieber needed a pick-me-up and some convincing to stick to the music game <i>another</i> time, he looked to a pro athlete for some wisdom.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Nearly Quit Music Altogether" id="vid:793962" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"There was a show in Orlando, [Florida] ... It was a day where he had to make a decision if he was going to continue on or not, 'cause he was fighting," Braun recalled to MTV News. "We were in Orlando. We had a sold-out arena show, and it had gotten to a point where kids were surrounding hotels, and you're talking about a kid who is 15, 16 years old, and he went and did a show 20,000 people, sold out, but right before he went into the show, he was having a little bit of an attitude." (Bieber played Orlando on his <i>My World</i> Tour in August 2010.)</P><P>"And he goes in the show, and he was fine, and he comes off, and I go, 'What was that before the show?' and he just broke down, and he said, 'I can't do it anymore. You got to remember he didn't want to be a star: I found him, and it happened."</P><P>Bieber and Braun had a major heart-to-heart as he struggled with his superstardom, but the teen did offer one suggestion on how he might be able to come to terms with how he was feeling. "So, we had a long talk about 'Is this what you want?' He sat there, got real quiet, he looked at me and goes, 'I want to meet Kobe Bryant.'</P><P>"And I was like, 'Kobe Bryant? We just had this emotional conversation.' It was actually a pretty profound moment."</P><P>Three weeks later, the encounter happened. Braun recalled, "They had a pretty intense conversation and something that I think Justin will never forget."</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Justin Bieber Proving His Haters Wrong With 'Good Music'" id="vid:793035.id:1687833" width="415" height="255"></div><p></p>

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean outed in Google Play Store listing, 'coming soon' to Galaxy Nexus

Android Central

Well well well, what do we have here. It seems that a possibly careless listing on the part of Google has just outed the next version of Android. It's outed as version 4.1, as Jell... -- we're going out on a limb here and saying Jelly Bean -- and more specifically, that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be the first phone to receive it. Wowzers.

So, we've all been assuming for weeks upon weeks that we'd be hearing something about the next iteration of our favorite mobile platform. It isn't the biggest surprise in either name or version number, but it is a little surprising it has been outed in this way.

So, are we going to see some sign of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean next week in San Francisco? As it stands, all signs would point to yes. Exciting times folks.

CIA releases declassified documents from 9/11 file

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In the months before the terrorist attacks of September 2001, the CIA unit dedicated to hunting for Osama bin Laden complained that it was running out of money, and analysts considered the likelihood of catching the terror leader to be extremely low, according to government records published Tuesday.

The declassified documents, dated between 1992 and 2004, are heavily blacked out and offer little new information about what the U.S. knew about the al-Qaida plot before 2001. Many of the files are cited in the 9/11 Commission report, published in 2004. The commission determined the failure that led to 9/11 was a lack of imagination, and U.S. intelligence agencies did not connect the dots that could have prevented the attacks.

Though few new details are revealed in the documents, the files offer more historical context for the years surrounding the deadliest terror attack on U.S. soil.

The National Security Archive obtained the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request and published them on its website Tuesday. The archive is a private group seeking transparency in government.

An April 2000 document from the CIA's bin Laden unit alluded to a budgetary cash crunch that was cutting into the agency's efforts to track the terror leader.

At that time, al-Qaida was a major concern to U.S. intelligence agencies because of the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania that killed many, including two CIA employees. Bin Laden had declared a holy war against the U.S., and the CIA had received multiple warnings that al-Qaida intended to strike the U.S.

"Need forward movement on supplemental soonest," said a heavily blacked-out document titled "Islamic Extremist Update." The supplemental budget was still being reviewed by the national security council and White House Office of Management and Budget. Because of budgetary constraints, the bin Laden unit would move from an "offensive to defensive posture," the document said. This meant that officials feared they would have to shelve some of their more elaborate proposals to track al-Qaida and instead rely on existing resources.

The "Uzbek Initiative," referenced in the same document, was one of the more expensive programs the CIA ran at the time, according to a source familiar with the initiative. The program involved paying off CIA tipsters who monitored bin Laden followers traveling through Uzbekistan. The source spoke anonymously as a condition of describing the sensitive program.

The documents do not make clear whether the portion of the budget in question was passed. But they hint at complaints later detailed publicly after the 9/11 attacks by previous directors of the bin Laden unit that the Bush and Clinton administrations did not fully appreciate the severity of the threat, and as a result failed to fully fund their operations.

The documents also show that U.S. officials were concerned that bin Laden was using Afghanistan's national airline to carry in vast cash reserves when he was sheltered by the ruling Taliban mullahs in the late 1990s. The CIA's "National Intelligence Daily" in June 1999 urged the imposition of sanctions on Ariana Airlines, then controlled by the Taliban, in order to put pressure on bin Laden's cash flow. His cash flow reportedly depended heavily on flights from the United Arab Emirates into Afghanistan.

"Closing of Ariana's UAE offices would force them to find alternative ? and most likely less secure ? carriers, routes and methods for moving bin Laden's cash," the document said. Later that year, the U.S. and United Nations imposed harsh sanctions on Afghanistan and its airline, shutting down all flights and closing Ariana's offices abroad.

The newly released files also offer details about the subsequent investigations into the attacks.

In one case, the U.S. intelligence community investigated a link between one of the hijackers and the Iraqi Intelligence Service ? a connection that was later proved false but that the White House used in its campaign to connect the attacks to Iraq.

According to a Dec. 8, 2001, CIA report that was sent to the White House Situation Room, the CIA had already made a preliminary determination that 9/11 hijacker Mohammed Atta had not in fact traveled to Prague in the Czech Republic in May 2000 to rendezvous with a senior official of the Iraqi Intelligence Service. Atta was an Egyptian national who piloted American Airlines Flight 11 into the World Trade Center. That he would have met with the IIS was significant for intelligence officials looking for a connection between al-Qaida and Iraq.

But just one day after the report was sent to the White House, Vice President Dick Cheney claimed on NBC's "Meet the Press" that it had been "pretty confirmed" that Atta had gone to Prague several months before the attack. According to the 9/11 Commission report, it turned out to be a case of mistaken identity after a Pakistani with a similar name tried to get into the Czech Republic but was turned away. The document was the basis for a footnote in chapter seven of the 9/11 report.

Even though the information about Atta meeting with the ISS was later disproved, it still resonated with those bent on going to war with Iraq.

The hundreds of pages of CIA files released Tuesday include a chronology of the agency's efforts to catch bin Laden.

A March 2004 CIA report entitled, "The Rise of UBL and al-Qaida and the Intelligence Community Response," discusses the likelihood of the CIA capturing bin Laden in the late 1990s using Afghans to do the job. Such a plan didn't seem viable.

The CIA estimated that none of the available Afghan units had more than a 10 percent chance of capturing the heavily guarded bin Laden. Another option was using Ahmed Shah Massoud, leader of the Northern Alliance, who was friendly with the CIA and fighting the Taliban. "Even if he agreed to do so, his chances of success against the Taliban were judged to be less than 5 percent," the report said. Al-Qaida operatives killed Massoud on Sept. 9, 2001.

President Bill Clinton was criticized for not doing more to catch bin Laden. But the documents show it wouldn't have been an easy task, though some at the CIA were still hopeful they could get him.

"The odds of success are iffy," Michael Scheuer, who ran the CIA's bin Laden unit, said in a 1998 secret memo that was among the declassified documents released Tuesday. "And the thing could blow up at any point along the way."

It would take the U.S. government another 13 years to catch and kill bin Laden.

Power of playtime: Single mothers can reduce stress by playing, engaging with children

ScienceDaily (June 19, 2012) ? A group of three Kansas State University researchers is studying ways to help single mothers improve their relationship with their children.

Among many of their findings, they have discovered that single mothers who engage with children in daily activities -- such as reading stories or playing games -- may experience lower levels of stress.

The researchers -- Blake Berryhill, Tulsa, Okla.; Kristy Soloski, Parma, Ohio; and Rebekah Adams, Ripon, Calif. -- are all doctoral students in marriage and family therapy and work with the K-State Family Center.

About 41 percent of births in the United States are to unwed mothers, Berryhill said, and it has been shown that single mothers often have higher levels of parental stress than married mothers. Parental stress involves the difficulty that a mother can experience from the demands of being a parent.

"Single mothers can feel constantly overloaded and overwhelmed at being a parent and trying to fulfill all of their responsibilities," Berryhill said. "Being a single mother brings extra stress, because they have decreased economic resources, longer work hours and their social support network may be limited as well. Because of all of this, they can feel the constant stress of 'how am I doing in my role as a mother?'"

The researchers wanted to develop ways to help single mothers by better understanding the relationship between parental stress, parental engagement and child temperament. Parental engagement involves spending time with a child through daily activities, such as reading stories, playing games or putting their child to bed. Child temperament involves a mother's perception of the child, such as viewing the child as someone who cries a lot, is fussy or gets upset easily.

The researchers used a national set of data related to single mothers and studied parental stress, parental engagement and child temperament when the children were ages 1, 3 and 5.

By studying this data set, the researchers discovered several important findings:

* Single mothers who reported high levels of parental stress when their child was 1 were more likely to continue to have high levels of parental stress when their child was 5.

* Single mothers who spent time engaging in daily activities with their child at age 1 were more likely to continue to stay engaged with their child at age 5.

* Child temperament at age 1 can predict levels of parental engagement when a child is 1 and 5 years old. The more difficult a child is at an early age, the less likely the mother is to engage with them.

* Child temperament at age 1 can predict the level of parental stress when the child is 1. If a child is seen as difficult and fussy, it increases the level of parental stress.

* The level of parental stress does not predict the level of parental engagement. This means that even if a single mother is stressed or overwhelmed in her role as a parent, it does not predict how much time she will spend with her child.

* A higher level of parental engagement can reduce the level of parental stress. This means that the more time a mother spends engaging with her child in daily activities, the lower level of stress she may experience and the more energizing she may feel as a parent.

"The last finding was especially interesting to us because it helped us realize that the answer is spending time with their children," Berryhill said. "Being a single mother and being a parent in general is very exhausting, but if a mother is willing to spend time with her children, it can reduce her parental stress because she will feel that in her role as a mom, she is doing an adequate job."

For the three clinicians, the discovery that engagement can reduce stress was an unexpected, yet positive finding.

"If we can help moms spend more time with their child and help them in that way, then their levels of parental stress will be reduced and they will have more fulfillment in their role as a mother," Soloski said. "Our role becomes helping them find meaningful ways to interact with their children."

"Often times mothers are encouraged to engage with their children for the positive impact it has on the child," Adams said. "The findings show there is long-term positive impact for the mother as well."

The researchers plan follow-up studies focusing on how stress from work affects the parent-child relationship as well as how the relationship changes beyond the age of 5 and into adolescence. Soloski's adviser is Jared Durtschi, assistant professor of family studies and human services. Jared Anderson, assistant professor of family studies and human services, advises Berryhill and Adams.

Ice-T dug deep into his rolodex to bring out all-stars while filming his new documentary, "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap." The film, which opened in theaters Friday, includes appearances from legends like KRS-One and Melle Mel, to current powerhouses like Dr. Dre and his protégé Eminem.

During his recent visit to "RapFix Live," Ice-T discussed the process of putting the film together, explaining that Dr. Dre and Eminem both made important contributions to the finished product. Ice caught up with Dr. Dre at his California home for an important chat about hip-hop's past and present, during which he broke down the difference between writing regular rhymes and being able to craft a song, while detailing his memories of recording with Tupac.

"[Dre] said there's a difference between a rapper and a songwriter," Ice-T explained of his conversation with the legendary West Coast producer. "Dre says, 'You've gotta write me a song. I don't need bars — I know you've got skills, but we need songs, so give me the hook first.' He says a lot of rappers get lost, but that's what Eminem does. They write these incredible songs, and that's basically what Dre likes to take to the marketplace."

In the documentary, Ice-T also links up with Eminem in the studio, where the Detroit native explains that being a white rapper forced him to work harder to prove himself. During the conversation, Eminem broke down his method of writing rhymes, but it's hard to say that the explanation really clarified things. Of the Shady Records CEO's explanation of his complicated rhyme scheme, Ice said, "It was like you were listening to a scientist."

Learn how more of hip-hop's greatest MCs craft their rhymes in Ice-T's informative documentary, "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap," in theaters now.

Microsoft Surface: 5 Tablet Features That Trump Apple's iPad

In a radical shift for Bill Gates' 37-year-old software company, Microsoft unveiled a tablet in Los Angeles on Monday. The "Surface" aims to be a direct competitor to Apple's iPad, sporting a form factor that's thinner than Apple's tablet, and it also tackles several things the award-winning iPad can't do, like type well or stand up straight.

Microsoft did not reveal many of the tablet's specs at Monday's event, but at least from the outside -- I was tempted to say "surface" -- it looks like Microsoft could give the iPad a run for its money. No other tablet can say that so far; Android's current strategy to tackle Apple is too fractured, and the initial excitement surrounding Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet has subsided considerably. But the Microsoft Surface is thinking outside the box with its tablet, and it looks like it could be a prime iPad competitor -- if it's priced right.

"From touch to type, office to living room, from your screen to the big screen, you can see more, share more, and do more with Surface," Microsoft proclaims?on its website. "Create, collaborate and get stuff done with Office. Explore your world with fast, fluid Windows 8 apps. Discover new music, movies, and games in the Windows Store."

Here are five key features about the Surface that may have you thinking about Microsoft for your next tablet purchase.

(In full disclosure, I am a proud owner of an iPad, and I would never give it up.)

Why You Might Want A Microsoft Surface Over An Apple iPad

  1. The Kickstand. The Smart Cover for the iPad was a good idea: Essentially, Apple built a magnetized, self-cleaning cover for its tablet that, in addition to protecting the screen from scratches, also served as a way to hold the device. The Smart Cover has a low-angled typing position -- which is good for typing but not viewing -- and a high-angled viewing position for watching movies, but there is no adequate position in between. While some people have ideas on how to improve the Smart Cover, Microsoft thought outside the box and created a kickstand that disappears into the device when it's not needed, but sprouts out of the back of the tablet like a car door when you need it to stand up.?
  2. Full Keyboard and Trackpad. One of the few major flaws in the iPad is the lack of a physical keyboard. Steve Jobs always dreamed of creating a beautifully simple tablet that needed no added interface -- no stylus, no second screen, no nothing -- but typing is the one thing that is not intuitive on the iPad. Users simply don't know what keys they're typing unless they're looking directly at the screen, but fluid typing should let the user focus on other activities besides looking at the keys. Microsoft has a solution: Build a keyboard and separate trackpad right into the back of the tablet cover.

The results are the Touch and Type Covers for Microsoft Surface. The Touch Cover includes an integrated multitouch keyboard and trackpad, which adds only a total of 3 mm to the overall thickness of the Surface. The Touch Cover also "senses keystrokes as gestures," which will apparently make typing much faster and easier. Microsoft also created the Type Cover for Surface, which is a full tactile keyboard with actual moving keys, clickable buttons, and a multi-touch trackpad. The Type Cover, since it includes physical keys, is only 5 mm thick, but at least Microsoft has plenty of typing options for its tablet customers. Apple doesn't make any first-party keyboard accessories for iPad, so users would have to buy a Bluetooth keyboard from a third-party like Radio Shack; Microsoft's solution is all-in-one.

  3. Different Interface. The two most popular mobile platforms -- iOS and Android -- look almost exactly alike. Who copied whom here doesn't necessarily matter; what matters is that if you choose to buy a Microsoft Surface tablet, you're working with a completely new tablet design. The Metro UI in Windows 8 is that same geometric-based design you would find in a Windows Phone or on the Xbox 360, and its live-updating tiles are great at providing up-to-date information that can be viewed at a glance. The interface is also far less about icons and much more about photos, colors and tiles. The iPad's beauty is in its simplicity; the Surface's beauty is in its thematic design. You can't go wrong with either, but Microsoft's UI is certainly refreshing for those a bit tired of Android and Apple.
  4. Sleek and Sexy. The Microsoft Surface is actually slightly thinner than the new iPad -- the Surface running Windows RT is 9.3 mm thick?compared to the 9.4 mm new iPad -- but the device also sports a slightly larger 10.6-inch ClearType display that can play 1080p HD. The resolution of the Microsoft Surface is still unknown, so we don't know how it'll stack up to the razor-sharp 2880 x 1648 pixel Retina Display, but the bottom line is same thickness, bigger screen.

While the iPad is certainly sleek and beautiful, its color scheme is highly conservative. Apple's tablet comes in just white or black; the Microsoft Surface, on the other hand, comes in several pastel colors, including charcoal, pink, blue and red.

  5. The Microsoft Ecosystem: Apple was always about building "the complete solution"; not just the hardware, not just the software, but the complete experience. While Microsoft traditionally kept its platform open, the company has been slowly getting into building integrated solutions. At the E3 Expo in early June, Microsoft unveiled a stunning new technology platform called SmartGlass,?which essentially connects the television and the Xbox to smartphones and tablets, letting users consume their media in a much simpler and more enjoyable way.?

By connecting the Xbox 360 with Xbox Live and Kinect, users can vocally or digitally command their TVs to play movies, music, TV shows and games, and now surf the Web --?Microsoft?officially announced Internet Explorer will join the Xbox experience. But SmartGlass is primarily an application: By downloading a SmartGlass app to their smartphones or tablets, users can watch shows or listen to music on the TV, but when it's time to head out the door, users can pick up exactly where they left off directly on their smartphones and tablets. It's similar to Apple's version of AirPlay, which connects the Apple TV with MacBook,?iPhone, and?iPad?devices. Owners of the Microsoft Surface will be able to enjoy SmartGlass in ways other viewers cannot. For example, the SmartGlass app will make the tablet into an intelligent supplemental screen when content is being shown on your TV via Xbox. For instance, if you're watching HBO's "Game of Thrones," SmartGlass can offer useful contextual information, like watching the characters' locations on a world map as they travel in the show. In games like Madden, players will be able to use SmartGlass to draw up the next play on their smartphone or tablet. All in all, SmartGlass is packed with features, but it's an incredibly simple and fluid experience. More importantly, users can't enjoy the experience without owning an Xbox.?

Of all of the tablets out there, the Microsoft Surface is by far the most useful-looking non-iPad there is. Microsoft has added a lot of physical features to the surface -- sorry, couldn't resist -- but we still have yet to know what really powers Microsoft's foray into tablet hardware. We'll see what makes up the display, the battery life it gets, and more features inside the device that make it tick.

But what we know about the Microsoft Surface will be enough for customers to buy. It's a thin, sleek tablet with a big beautiful screen and a functional cover that acts as a keyboard and trackpad, but more importantly, the user interface is completely different.

Apple has been telling consumers to "Think Different" since 1997, but since most tablet owners seek out the iPad, consumers would actually be thinking different if they bought a tablet without an app layout. The Microsoft Surface is easily the greatest departure from the app layouts on the iOS and Android platforms: The Metro UI is just as sleek and sexy as the device itself, and the live tiles will certainly be gratifying to eyes and fingers on such a big screen. We'll know more once Microsoft unveils more about its own device.

Microsoft will reportedly sell the Windows RT model of the Surface before the holiday season starts, and the "Pro" version running Windows 8 several months later.
